Every website that is listed in the directory is manually reviewed for quality and relevance before it is listed. DMOZ directory data is syndicated throughout many hundreds of websites and even Google Directory uses this data. Having a listing in DMOZ can result in many hundreds of additional backlinks. In recent months, DMOZ has had some very severe server issues and lost a lot of data. The submission process is now open again. Most of the data lost in the crash was data relating to previously submitted and queued sites. One of the bigger problems with DMOZ previously was the size of the queue for waiting sites.
Dmoz Directory to shut down on March 14, 2017
This list is compilation of known bugs and requested improvements in the Open Directory Projects data export dump format. Most of the items on this list have been reported or requested by multiple people over the last few years – for the most part, all I’ve done is collect them into one place in the hopes of speeding up the process of improving the data dump files. I’ve transferred all the outstandings bugs and feature requested from this list into the ODP bugzilla.
Unfortunately, ODP has chosen to keep their bug database secret from their users and the general public, so I will continue to maintain this list as well. Otherwise, scroll down for my list of the major bugs and feature requests.
and index that DMOZ page, which now has a 2/10/11 cache date. I’m sure there’s a lesson in here somewhere, but I refuse to learn it. It does.
Recent info has hinted at the End of Q1. But just yesterday Thu. So to find out more I decided to roam around the web and see what I would dig up. From what I could find, which was not much, it looks like this is going to be a complete overhaul of how the data is stored, accessed and presented. This update should allow the directory to evolve in a way that it never really has been able to.
And since it has largely been in the same shape for the past 10 years, this can only be a good thing for the once mighty DMOZ. The short answer is No. But a deeper answer would be that this may lead to the development of additional tools that could help editors analyze websites and identify higher quality sites based on common non-dmoz data metrics, like say if the URL was also listed in the Yahoo Directory or Best of the Web. This may also lead to more excitement among editors and spur increased editing time as well as more interest in people becoming new editors.
You never know how this will shake things up at the ODP. But I now have a reason to look forward to the end of March other than the melting of the 2 foot deep snow in my yard and the 4 foot long ice hanging from my roof. So what do you think about DMOZ 2.

In most cases, only one submission to the Open Directory is necessary. Once submitted, the site will eventually either be added to the directory, or it will be refused. Because DMOZ is an entirely volunteer-driven directory, because sites are added for free, and because thousands of webmasters from all over the world attempt to game the system every day, you can expect to wait anywhere from a few days to over a year for your site to be added, if it is accepted.
When a site is submitted, it is sent into a queue of sites to be reviewed. If the site is submitted to the most relevant and appropriate branch of the directory, then the editor of that category will review it and either add it or dump it. Sites which are submitted to the optimal branch get the fastest results.
How often should a site be resubmitted to the Open Directory (DMOZ)? Sites submitted to the Open Directory are tracked by the date of the submission.
Wikivoyage’s goals include providing a complete and reliable guide for both on-line and off-line use by travelers. However, we don’t want to clutter our guides with links to every Web site related to a subject. We explicitly have forming a Web directory as a non-goal. In order to provide service to those travelers seeking lots of Web links, we have a feature to add TwinPages links to DMOZ topics on the same subject. Just as our links to Wikipedia provide an encyclopedic perspective on a destination, links to DMOZ provide a Web-directory perspective on the same destination.
Links to DMOZ should appear after the body text of the article, after any links to other language versions of Wikivoyage , and after links to Wikipedia. Links do not appear within text of the article but an “Other Sites” box on the left hand side of the page, together with any Wikipedia links.

Catch up on stories from the past week and beyond at the Slashdot story archive. The DMOZ has kept downloadable archives of their entire directory. I’m sure it will be cloned by dozens of people. It’s sad to see this project go under. I used their directory data to back one of my first web projects. I also discovered a lot of resources related to my interests through it that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. Some years ago, a site I was involved with was moving. Someone contacted DMOZ with a simple request not to keep listing the old address, because their influence on search engines was distorting the rankings and putting the old, soon-to-disappear, out-of-date site higher than the new, up-to-date one.
That was creating significant problems for people getting the wrong information, and that in turn was causing a lot of hassle and wasted time for our volunteer organisers who had to clean up the mess. The DMOZ rep basically told us they wouldn’t change anything because they were there for users not site operators.

When talking about the DMOZ two camps typically emerge, those who support the directory and its mission editors and those who support getting into the directory SEOs. The determination by both groups to satisfy their goals fuels the constant struggle between webmasters and directory. But since they do, I decided to approach DMOZ for input on a number of commonly asked questions and post answers and viewpoints here at Link Week. Nothing earth shattering came out, but I did pull a number of interesting tidbits from the interview and the research I conducted to support my input.
I joined the ODP team shortly afterward to help develop the ontology and the community self-governance model. In , I left full-time employment with AOL, and took a position with the Federal government to start-up a new search engine program, but I remained as a consultant on the ODP. But through all these career changes, the ODP has been a constant in my life. Is there a difference?
Bob: DMOZ is essentially a meritocracy in which editors are granted high permissions based on their interest and quality of participation. There are two general types of permissions: those that allow one to edit anywhere, and those that allow one to participate in community management. They ensure that Meta Editors and Editalls are being fair and equitable, and that the guidelines are kept current. Bob: Accepting money for submissions is strictly against the community codes of conduct.

Although there are a number of other important directories that are volunteer run, Google places particular importance on DMOZ.

This is significant because they only do so when the details your page provides are not good enough and they are unable to create a better snippet on their own. It was important as the information could largely be trusted because it was independently verified. Last August I wrote a blog post about how attention merchants were sucking the value out of online publishing. In it I noted how the Yahoo! The concept of a neutral web is dead. In its place is agenda-driven media. As the tech oligarchs broadly defund publishing, the publishers still need to eat.
